世の中には不快なものなんていくらでもある。
下世話で陳腐で、美しくないものばかり。人間の欲を刺激して会社が儲けたいだけ、未来に何の理想もない不要物であふれている。そう思おうと思えば、いくらでもそう感じられる。
だからもし「不快だから排除すべきだ」と言い出したら、きりがない。
ハナから全部が不快なのだから、むしろ寛容であることこそが正義だろう。
潔癖でいたいならそれでもいい。ただし、その潔癖性にどれほどの真実があるのか、自分自身に問い直してほしい。
一貫性のない、矛盾した潔癖ならば、自分のためにも周りのためにも絶対にやめた方がいい。
同じように、理想を語るならば、その背後に真実と責任がなければならない。
中身の伴わない無責任で見せかけのリベラルほど、社会を危うくするものはない。
自分が当事者になった途端にトーンダウンしたり、矛盾を突かれて開き直ったり──そんな程度で他人を批判すべきではない。
胸を張って言えないなら、まずは他者に対して寛容であるべきだ。
その上でなら、意見はいくらでも言えばいい。
嫌悪感に支配された言葉に、理路整然とした真実が宿ると思うか？
まずは寛容になることだ。
そうでなければ、いかなる理想論も砂上の楼閣にすぎない。
There is no shortage of unpleasant things in this world.
Vulgar, shallow, and devoid of beauty—merely products designed to provoke human desire so that companies can profit, overflowing with useless goods that hold no vision for the future. If you choose to see it that way, you can feel that everything is like this.
That is why, if one insists, “This should be eliminated because it is unpleasant,” there would be no end to it. Since everything is unpleasant from the outset, it is tolerance itself that must be regarded as justice.
If you wish to be fastidious, that is your choice. But you should question how much truth there really is in that fastidiousness. If it is inconsistent and self-contradictory, you had better abandon it—for your own sake and for the sake of others.
Likewise, if you speak of ideals, there must be truth and responsibility behind them.
Nothing destabilizes society more than a hollow, irresponsible liberalism that exists only for show.
To tone down the moment you become a party to the issue, or to brazen it out when your contradictions are exposed—that is no ground from which to criticize others.
If you cannot speak with your head held high, you should first be tolerant toward others.
Only then, speak as much as you like.
Do you truly believe that words driven by hatred or disgust can carry coherent truth?
The first step is tolerance.
Without it, every lofty ideal is nothing more than a castle built on sand.
