It’s the start of the new year, and yet no brilliant ideas are coming to me.
I’m pondering over what the grand design for this year should be.
From a general perspective, music activities aren’t about producing tracks or music videos—they’re all about live performances.
But if you want to put on a great live show, it takes meticulous rehearsals with a solid team of performers, including sound engineers.
And when you think about the costs—(rehearsal venue + total fees) × the number of sessions—how much does it all add up to?
On top of that, you have the venue fee and the need to draw an audience into that space.
Even though there are so many people bustling around the city, countless folks won’t come unless it’s free.
Let’s face it, the kind of parties that simply play the latest hits will attract far more people.
But unless you gather an audience, no matter how good the live performance is, it leaves no lasting impact.
I’ve recorded as much as I could, but there are always limits.
And banks, unlike how they treat restaurants, won’t lend money to musicians.
In short, they see it as just a hobby, not as real work.
It’s not popular either.
Performing the music you love (i.e., your own songs) is probably viewed as nothing more than a personal hobby in today’s world.
So even then, do you still want to say that live performances are the essence of music activities?
Spending money on something that leaves no trace is genuinely painful.
But even if you cut every possible cost, what kind of result can you really achieve?
That brilliant idea… well, it hasn’t come to me yet.
Maybe I could try performing outdoors, but street performances don’t allow for proper monitoring.
The environment is so poor you can’t even tell if you’re singing properly.
I don’t buy into the idea that a professional should perform perfectly in any environment.
And I’m not keen on jumping on the bandwagon of events that ride the wave of popular songs.
That leaves one thing I haven’t tried yet: a duo with a DJ.
In terms of sound engineering, it’s the simplest option.
In that case, I’d have to experiment with how to make playing pre-made tracks musically interesting.
Ideally, I’d want complete multi-track outputs, but how many channels should I divide it into?
Or should I have the DJ replace only the beats freely?
If it’s just me performing and I need to make it work as entertainment,
I’d probably have to take a more theatrical approach.
Or I could hire a choreographer and have full choreography for every single song.
Theatrical approaches bring originality,
while dance focuses on groove with the audience.
Of course, what I really want is to bring a full team of musicians and dancers for live performances.
But if I want to maintain my standards in the musical aspect,
I’ll have to introduce some kind of strong individuality or impact—some kind of entertainment element.
Or perhaps visual arts elements, though costumes and lighting would cost even more.
If I could manage to secure a tie-up with some brand, that’d probably make things move faster.
I need my right-hand person even if they are lefty.
新年早々名案が浮かばないわけですよ
今年のグランドデザインをどうしようかってさ
世間的には音楽活動というのは
音源制作やMUSIC VIDEOではなくLIVEだという
ところが良いLIVEをしようと思えば
PAを含む演奏メンバー、パフォーマーを集めた
入念なリハーサルが必要だ
だとすると一体どれほどのコストがかかるのか
(リハ会場+トータルのギャラ)×回数
+ハコ代の上にハコの中に人を集める必要が出てくる
せっかく都内にはこんなに人が溢れているのに
無料じゃなきゃ行かないなんて人も山ほどいる
残念だけど巷の人気曲が流れてるだけのパーティの方が
圧倒的に集客率はいいだろう
だけど人を集めない限り
どれほど良いLIVEをやったところで
それは後には残らない
できる限り記録はしてきたが
それでも限界がある
だけど銀行は飲食店と違って
ミュージシャンには金を貸してはくれないときている
要するに、趣味でやってると思われてんだな
仕事だと思われてない
まあ流行ってもいない
自分の好きな音楽(=自分の曲)を演奏するなんてことは
今の世の中的にはただの趣味だってことなんだろうさ
それでもまだ音楽活動=LIVEだって言いたい？
後にも残らないものに
金をかけるのは本当に苦痛だし
じゃあコスト散々ケチったところで
どれほどのものができるのか？
その名案が、まあ浮かばない
外でやってみるのも良いけど
路上じゃモニターもクソもないから
環境劣悪すぎて
まともに歌えてるかどうかも
わかんないんだよ
どんな環境でも上手くやるのがプロだなんて
俺は全く思ってはいないから
かと言って世の人気曲に便乗するような
イベントはあんまりやりたくないしな
とすればまだ試してないのは
DJとのデュオだろうな
PA的には一番簡単だと思う
となると既成のトラックを
どういう形で音出ししていくのが
音楽的に面白いのかを試さなきゃならないのと
完全パラアウトが理想だけど
何チャンネルまで分けるべきか
あるいはビートだけ自由に差し替えて
もらったりするべきか
かつ、私ひとりでパフォーマンスを
エンターテイメントとして成立させるのであれば
やはり演劇的なアプローチをするしかないだろう
それかもう振り付け師に頼んで
全曲カッチリ振付を決めてしまうかだな
演劇だとオリジナリティ
ダンスだとお客さんとのグルーヴだな
本当はミュージシャンいっぱい連れて
ダンサーいっぱい連れて
生演奏でやるのしかやりたくないんだけども
楽曲面で妥協しない為には
何かしら強い個性とインパクト
エンターテイメント方面を
何かしら持ち込むしかないだろう
あるいは視覚的芸術の要素だろうけど
衣装とか照明なんて手出したら
もっとお金がかかっちゃうからな
どこかブランドとタイアップでもとれたら
早いんだろうけども
右腕が欲しいよ
